Higher prices linked to sustainability and fair wages drive Colombia’s push into the EU banana market.
Colombian banana producers are aiming to boost exports to the European Union, drawn by higher prices tied to the region’s sustainability and fair wage standards, according to Emerson Aguirre, head of the country’s Banana Growers Association.
Aguirre emphasized the EU’s recognition of Colombia’s environmental and labor practices as a key advantage. In 2023, banana exports from Colombia exceeded $1 billion, totaling 109 million 20kg boxes. The EU absorbed around 70% of this volume, while the U.S. and U.K. each accounted for 15%.
Concerns over possible U.S. tariffs were downplayed, with Aguirre stating any added costs would likely shift to consumers. However, some analysts warn tariffs could still affect U.S. demand.
