Cencosud’s Peruvian operation grew sales while improving profitability during the second quarter.
Cencosud, the Chilean retail group that operates the Wong and Metro supermarket chains in Peru, reported a strong second quarter in the country. Adjusted EBITDA from its Peruvian operations increased 11.8% in local currency.
Revenue rises 6.4%
Revenue in Peru increased 6.4%, meaning earnings grew faster than sales. Cencosud attributed the result to the performance of its supermarket business, improved commercial efficiency and the contribution from its shopping-centre operations.
The group currently operates 20 Wong supermarkets, 50 Metro supermarkets and 18 Metro cash-and-carry stores in Peru.
Digital business expands
Across the wider Cencosud group, online sales rose 14.6% year on year during the quarter. The company also reported a record 31 million active loyalty-programme customers across its markets.
