Dramatic decline in exports of grapes
MD
The Nashik region (south west of India), the largest grape growing region in the country, has experienced a dramatic decline in its exports.
The Nashik region produces 55% of total exports of grapes in the country. For the 2010-2011 year (from December to April), exports of grapes fell 58% from last year.
This fall in exports is the result of heavy rains which have led to a drop in production.
On nearly 50,000 hectares in the district, 38,000 hectares have suffered production losses of more than 50%, and the remaining losses of about 30%.
At the end of April, 15 000 tons were exported to Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Indonésia, Taiwan, Dubai. This season, exporting companies was nearly a hundred; they received about 1,200 health certificates and shipped the crops of about 12,000 producers.
