Nice campaign in perspective for the Strawberries of Quebec.
In Quebec, the strawberries season began with a ten-day delay from the usual schedule but the harvest promises to be plentiful this year.
According to the professionals the quality is very good, the fruits are of good caliber and with a beautiful color. Since mid-June volumes have increased rapidly in all regions of Quebec. An overproduction is even possible over a few weeks and could lead to a price reduction of 15 to 20%.
In Quebec, more than thirty varieties of strawberries are grown, from the earliest (Veestar, Annapolis, Honeoye) harvested in June, to mid-season varieties (Jewel, Kent, Chambly, Bounty, Darselect, Yamaska) are harvested until the end of July and late varieties (Seascape, Aromas) from late July to mid-October.
Quebec is the 3rd largest producer in North America after California and Florida. In 2015 its production totaled 11 621 tonnes of strawberries and its exports 1.925 million CAD (1.414 million USD).
