The melon will be the first fresh Brazilian fruit to be exported to China. If Brazil manages to conquer some percentage of the Chinese market, its exports of melons could double.
A team from the General Administration of Chinese Customs (GACC) visited the melon-producing farms in the Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará regions, to certify farms as area free from fruit flies. Chinese technicians also visited the packing centers to check the storage and handling of the fruit.
The import of Brazilian melons has been approved. China is the largest market for consumption of melons in the world, with a consumption equivalent to 17 million tonnes. It is projected that if Brazil supplies some percent of the volume demanded by the Chinese market, its exports of melons will double. The Brazilian harvest coincides with the off-season in China.
In 2018, Brazil exported around 200,000 tonnes of melon and in 2019 more than 250,000 tonnes. The main destinations are the United States, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Russia and the European Union
