Not to be confused with the German Metro, the Metro chain operates 1,335 stores in Canada of all sizes, from convenience stores to hypermarkets.
Canadian chain Metro will face competition from Wal-Mart and Target by focusing on food and fresh produce.
Metro has established an action plan that focuses on "customer experience". With Super C and Food Basics, Metro is focusing on competitive prices, the first criterion of its customers. For other stores Metro wants to improve the quality of its fruits and vegetables and their presentation.
With "freshness", the chain is investing
$50,000 to $100,000 per store for these improvements. Begun last year in Ontario, this initiative has been successful and will be deployed heavily in Quebec this year.
The Canadian chain Metro operates many stores: 375 Metro, 80 Super C , 114 Food Basics, 85 Marché Richelieu, 86 Marché Amis, 205 Market Extra, 390 Servi Express, Service and Dépanneur Gem.
