European prices disappoint Indian exporters
MD
The collapse in the price of table grapes in Europe has disappointed the expectations of Indian exporters.
The price of table grapes decreased by approximately 33% over the same period last year. The association of grape exportaeurs (JAY) is disappointed at prices of Rs 40 per kg, against Rs 55-60 last year and this explains the decline in the European market.
Grapes from Argentina and South Africa arrived in the European market three months ago followed by grapes from Chile at the same time as Indian grapes causing a glut and falling prices.
Europe is an important market that receives 30 to 40% of Indian grape exports. In 2010-11, total exports of grapes totaled 99,278 metric tons, including 30,284 metric tons shipped in European countries.
