According to a recent report by the FTA (Freight Transport Association), 64% of transport companies are short of truck drivers. The shortage is estimated at 59,000 truck drivers.
According to the FTA report, 60% of truck drivers are over 44 years old and only 19% are under 35 years of age. The number of truck drivers is down by 16,000 or 5.0% from the previous year.
"The combination of an aging working population, a low unemployment rate, a drop in net migration vis-à-vis the EU and difficulties in attracting new candidates to the sector has created a shortage of drivers. Sally Gilson of FTA, the voice of the UK logistics industry, explained.
"The logistics sector is the engine of the economy that can not operate without truck drivers, they are an integral part of the logistics workforce and a vital part of the Kingdom's interconnected supply chain. Without them, businesses would simply stop and the country would have a hard time to keep trading. "
