In France, the 2023 harvest of Chasselas de Moissac PDO began on 23 August. Chasselas de Moissac was the 1st fresh fruit to be awarded an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée and has been listed in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2017.
This year's weather conditions were unusual. There was abundant rainfall interspersed with fairly warm but not excessive periods for most of the season. While excessive humidity in July could have caused the grapes to deteriorate, the dry month of August, with a short heatwave at the end of the ripening period, enabled the grapes to retain their exceptional quality. The absence of water stress encouraged the development of the grapes, which reached an exceptional size.
In terms of the volume harvested, the Syndicat is expecting a year 25% down on a normal season at around 2,600 tonnes (2,439 tonnes in 2022). The Chasselas de Moissac PDO appellation comprises 185 vineyards covering 409 hectares.
