The project to limit the consumption of potatoes in canteens has been condemed by U.S. producers
To combat obesity, the U.S. Department of Agriculture wants to limit the consumption of carbohydrates to 2 meals per week in school canteens.
The project has enraged potato products, who support initiatives to increase the number of fruits and vegetables available in schools but find that this project goes too far. The proposal will be
debated in the Senate.
The stakes are enormous as potato crops generates $3.3 billion in sales annually. Each month, an average American consumes 4.5 kg. However 1 in 4 children are obese in the U.S. and 1 in 3 overweight.
