According to NEPG, the total area will be 518,873 hectares (510,616 hectares in 2022) and the harvest will be around 23 million tonnes of potatoes. That's 1.3 million tonnes more than in 2022 (Photo: twitter.com/northgrowers)
NEPG (North-Western Potato Growers) brings together the national organisations of 4 Western European countries (Belgium, Germany, France and the Netherlands).
According to the latest NEPG study, the total surface area is 518,873 hectares (510,616 hectares in 2022) and yield estimates point to a harvest of around 23 million tonnes of early and ware potatoes. That's 1.3 million tonnes more than in 2022, and the same volume as in 2021.
This year, planting dates were 3 weeks later than average (around 15-20 May instead of 20-25 April). The weather conditions in August led to a sharp increase in yields, but also maintained very high levels of downy mildew (Phytophthora infestans) in some areas.
While production in 2023 is comparable to that in 2021, processors in the NEPG zone need around 2 million tonnes more potatoes than they did 2 years ago. In Europe, demand for processed products should continue to grow by around 4% each year, according to industry experts.
