Onion production in the Philippines fell by 11,000 tons last year. To develop and support national production, the government has decided to provide aid to the sector.
In the Philippines the Department of Agriculture has allocated PHP 94.6 million (USD 1.810 million) to develop and support onion production nationwide. These funds are intended for the producing provinces to purchase planting material of red and yellow onion varieties as well as organic and inorganic fertilizers.
This decision is part of the High-Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP). The ministry also provides aid for the marketing of products as well as the improvement of storage conditions.
According to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), onion production decreased by 11,000 tons last year. The country has experienced a large flow of imported onions which has led to a drop in the price of local onions.
