Peru remains the No.1 producer of potatoes in Latin America

According to Minagri (Ministerio de Agricultura y Riego) Peru remained the first potato producer in Latin America in 2019.
Minagri said domestic production reached 5.3 million tonnes in 2019. Potato crops cover 330,000 hectares, spread across 19 regions of the country. The average yield exceeds 16.1 tonnes / hectare.
According to Minagri, Peru remained the No.1 producer of potatoes in Latin America in 2019 with 5.3 million tonnes and the No. 14 worldwide. Peru is surpassed by the following countries: China (1), Russia (2), India (3), Poland (4), United States (5), Ukraine (6), Germany (7), Netherlands ( 8), Belarus (9), France (10), Iran (11), Turkey (12) and Canada (13).
Peru is considered the cradle of the potato with more than 7,408 varieties of indigenous potatoes and 90% of the production is concentrated in mountainous regions. But the production of more commercial varieties and with seeds certified for a better yield is favored in several regions of the country.
