Efficiency in harvesting of asparagus by reducing labour costs
Improved asparagus-harvesting and apple packaging solutions were presented by Strauss Verpackungsmaschinen GmbH at the PMA Fresh Summit expo in USA. After more than 20 years of expertise in asparagus processing and packing machines in 2013 Strauss started with developing and later testing its own asparagus harvesting aid during field trails. Strauss made it possible to pre-cut, prewash and pre-sort the manual harvested white and green asparagus directly in the field. Other solutions, developed by the company, enable to automatically sort, weigh, pack and label the product.
“We have added a removal system for scales leaves for white asparagus and improved our weighing system at our sorting lines so our customers have the finished and accurate bunches of asparagus directly after the sorting process”, - tells Mr Matthias Kinzel, Certified Engineering Technician and Sales Manager, Strauss Verpackungsmaschinen GmbH. He describes the machines as a solution for green and white asparagus from harvesting to packaging.
The automotive or pulled semi-automatic harvester lifts the film of up to 14 adjacent asparagus beds for manual harvesting. The asparagus gets manually cut to a predetermined length, washed and can be manually pre-sorted. According to Mr Kinzel, this harvesting vehicle reduces labour costs substantially and contributes significantly to the asparagus’ quality.
By a modular design, all machines can be customised to specific requirements by adding different components and can be combined with each other to avoid multiple touching of the product and to guarantee a smooth and time-efficient operation or they can be used alone to work separately. “We offer different solutions for every size of company. Strauss machines are specifically designed for white and green asparagus, apples and leeks, but they can also be used to process other similar products” – concludes Matthias Kinzel.
