Alert on deadly cucumbers
MD
After several fatal cases in Germany and the discovery that the Escherichia coli bacteria was the cause, the European Commission has launched an alert advising that cucumbers imported from Spain are a vehicle of transmission.
The disease is highly contagious and spread through raw vegetables and also human contact. Symptoms are headaches, stomach pains and diarrhea. More than 600 people have been ill for several days and 3 people have died in Germany. With an incubation period of 10 days, many other patients will appear.
After numerous tests, health officials discovered that imported vegetables were carrying the bacterium. German health authorities are warning people against cucumbers from Malaga and Almeria in Andalusia. Further ongoing tests show that tomatoes might also be infected.
In Spain, the authorities are trying to locate the infected farm and get details of shipments to stop the contamination.
