A farm in the centre of Berlin
MD
On the roof of an abandoned factory, a farm produces vegetables for Berliners looking to eat organic and local.
The creators of the "Frisch vom Dach" ("Fresh from the roof") chose an old malt factory in the south of the city of Berlin. An area of 7,000 square meters will grow cabbage, tomatoes and lettuce. The 22 tanks that were used to stir the malt will be converted into fish tanks.
A virtuous closed cycle is expected with the vegetables fertilized with fish droppings. The water will be purified by plants and return to the fish tanks. The process has only advantages: saving water and sound production without the addition of pesticides.
The creators of "Frisch von Dach" want to become the leading urban agriculture company and commercialise the process. The ECF (efficient city farm) uses principles such as greenhouses mounted on containers and could be installed on existing buildings around the world.
