According to the Commission responsible for establishing the maturity of the fruits, Lamas lemons and Washington and Thomson Navel oranges can be harvested from November 2nd and exported from November 7th. It is later than in 2016, but this season has already started late with the early varieties Meyer and Enterdonato also harvested later.
Between September 2016 and May 2017, 494,000 tonnes of all-variety lemons were exported, 24% more in quantity and 6% more in value. The Lamas variety constitutes about 60% of exports. This variety is also the one that is most in competition with Spanish lemons.
However, last year, some shipments of Turkish lemons were stopped at EU borders due to high pesticide levels and Europeans took additional control measures.
