Turkey has established a research program to increase the varietiies and quality of citrus.
Turkey produces about 3 million tons of citrus, one third of which is exported.
To increase the share of Turkish citrus on the international market by increasing their diversity and quality, Çukurova University in Adana and the Citrus Promotion Group of the Union of Mediterranean Fruits and Vegetables have developed a project over the last 5 years to find citrus varieties that are large and seedless. About 500,
000 euros have been invested.
After change using atomic radiation selected citrus the development of hybrid varieties should be done in spring and the first tests done by planting in different areas of citrus production such as Adana, Antalya, Hatay, Izmir and Mersin. Other techniques will also be used for a total of 37 hybrids.
