The expected output would be 7.8 million boxes. The decline is significant compared to the 10.8 million boxes produced for the 2015-16 season.
The citrus production in Florida, according to the latest forecasts from the Ministry of Agriculture, is expected to decline for grapefruit and a slight start for oranges.
The USDA report, dated May, reports orange production of about 68 million boxes (81.6 million the previous season), up by 1 million from the April forecast. For grapefruits, production would reach 7.8 million boxes.
At the opening of the forecast for the current season, forecasts announced 8.9 million boxes, then in April only 8.1 million boxes and now for the last report of May 7.8 million boxes.
For professionals in Florida it is the worst growing season for decades. The area is facing the "citrus greening" disease that affects its orchards. In the 1990s Florida production totaled 200 million boxes per year.
