"Béa du Roussillon" potato achieves AOP

The early potato "Bea du Roussillon" gets recognition with the PDO label recognized throughout the EU.
The early potato "Bea du Roussillon" has achieved Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).
Protected Designation of Origin is the European equivalent of the French AOC label. The PDO refers to a product with all stages (production, processing and preparation) made in the same geographical area, which gives the product its characteristics.
The Bea Roussillon is one of early potato, harvested before full maturity and derived exclusively from the Bea variety. The potato is elongated, flat and very regular. Its skin is light yellow, very smooth and fine.
Its flesh is pale yellow and it is known for its slightly sweet flavour, aroma and soft texture.
The Bea Roussillon comes from 22 municipalities in the department of Pyrenees-Orientales. This area is the only region (France, Italy and Spain combined) to offer this variety.
For producers, the PDO guarantees protection of the name "Bea du Roussillon" throughout the European Union.
2010 figures:
- 10 producers, 2 conditioners
- 1 cleaning station: sorting and packaging
- 150 ha planted with Bea for 3,000 tons
