A logo that would hide different criteria according to the EU member states?
The revision of the European regulation on organic should be completed by the end of this month.
At the EU Council meeting on the 12th of June, the Member States decided to continue the revision of the European BIO Regulation. The discussions begun 3 years ago highlighted several points of disagreement, the main ones being:
- cultivation in ferries: allowed in the Scandinavian countries and the Baltic countries, it would lead to the development of organic production above ground that would be in contradiction with the principles of the BIO
- national decommissioning measures: BIO products would be decommissioned above a certain residue threshold. Member States may impose these thresholds (Belgium, Italy, today). Problem: how to compensate producers affected by contamination.
- on-site control up to 24 months. Most professionals working in the BIO recommend a stricter control, at least once a year at all certified operators.
