Switzerland imports more and more food.
In Switzerland, food imports grew strongly from 2 million tonnes in 1990 to 4 million tonnes in 2016.
The Federal Department of Finance announces that food imports have increased from 2 to 4 million tons between 1990 and 2016, or 344 to 490 kg per inhabitant.
This growth varies according to the products, beverages have contributed the most with 40% of the total. Ready-to-eat foods also supported growth with an increase of 40Kg per capita.
Even when subject to tariffs, vegetables account for 9% of growth, increasing by 14 kg per capita, including 11 kg of potatoes. Fruit contributed to 8% of growth, up by 5 kg per capita, exotic fruits accounted for 3/4 of the group's growth.
