The system of import licenses for bananas will end in 2012.
Freshfel Europe has welcomed the repeal of the licensing system for banana imports by the European Commision.
The decision to abolish the licensing system for imports of bananas should enter into force on 1 January 2012, pending publication in the Official Journal of the EU in the coming weeks.
Each year, nearly 4.8 million tons of bananas from non EU countries are imported into the EU. Bananas originating in ACP countries (about
900,000 tons) no longer require import licenses after full market liberalization in 2008. Other supplying countries (mainly the Americas) had to file for import licenses.
Cumbersome and costly for operators and less important since the end of quotas, the import licensing system will soon end. Freshfel believes this step will bring benefits to banana importers as well as national authorities.
