The EU plans 150 million euros of aid to producers
MD
Mr Dacian Ciolos, European Commissioner for Agriculture, proposes 150 million Euros to support European vegetable growers affected by the epidemic of EHEC bacteria.
This amount is a beginning, liable to increase with the loss estimates from various countries. Farmers would be compensated up to 30% of the reference price in June said Mr Ciolos.
Spain considers that the help is very low. Spain, the 1st exporter of fruits and vegetables in Europe, saw its sales falling and is seeking reimbursement of 100%, like France, which also asked for "compensation for losses suffered by vegetable growers”.
Madrid estimates losses at about 225 million Euros per week and asks that Germany take on 100% compensation, even threatening Berlin of prosecution .
