Sharp increase in food prices in Colombia
VU
As a consequence of inflation, in January, 2022, the Colombian potato experienced a 140% increase year-over-year, according to the Consumer Price Index revealed by DANE.
Not only this tuber, but cassava (46.56%), bananas (15.53%), vegetables and greens (45.96%), fresh fruits (40.72%), edible oils (48.52%) and non-alcoholic beverages (20%) suffered a similar increase, according to DANE.
One of the main factors that prompted such behavior is lower rates of harvest and supply from the regions that concentrate production.
The other reason is because the prices of agricultural inputs grew, some of them even by 100 percent. The producers do not have more resources to buy fertilizers, and as a result they have to reduce the number of hectares planted.
Apart from what is indicated, the price increase is due to the national strike in April and May 2021 and the consequences of the pandemic.
From the Colombian Potato Federation (Fedepapa) they project that production will normalize for the second half of 2022 and, as a result, prices will decrease again.
