LIVE FROM MEDFEL: European apricot forecasts
The first harvests are expected to be 10 to 15 days late in all production basins, with production losses of 10 to 30% depending on the country, and -70% expected in Turkey following heavy frosts.
The first conference of the French MEDFEL trade show in Perpignan announces forecasts for European apricot harvests of around 508,000 tonnes, compared with around 560,000 tonnes in 2024. The capricious spring weather, with temperatures lower than in previous years, is expected to delay the first harvests by 10 to 15 days.
Deficit of 10 to 70% in the Mediterranean
Italy and Greece expect to harvest between 70 and 80% of their production potential, France and Spain over 90%. The European apricot harvest should therefore be lower than in 2024, but above the 2019-2023 average.
The world's leading producer, Turkey, which has a higher production potential than Europe, was hit by an exceptional cold snap in early April. Turkey expects to harvest barely 30% of its apricot crop, particularly in the Malatya region, the main production area. Although the vast majority of Turkish production is destined for drying, some is exported fresh to Eastern Europe and Germany, which will not be the case this year.
