The RFID system will open the doors of warehouses and storage areas to authorized persons only and to help fight against theft.
German supermarkets Aldi and Lidl will use RFID technology to protect their warehouses and storage areas.
After testing in 2010, the two supermarket chains will expand the use of RFID tags and readers. Each staff member will wear a badge with an RFID tag
, which the system has to recognise in order to open doors. If the ID is not recognized, the doors remain closed, blocking access to the warehouse.
Designed to reduce theft, the system will also improve safety. For example, if someone has remained too long in cold storage, the system will sound an alarm.
