In Italy the consumption of strawberries has increased by 31% since 2000.

In one of its latest reports, CSO makes the point on the strawberry sector in Italy. The sector has recovered well, mainly due to the varietal improvement, the development of techniques and a varied and extensive production schedule.

The consumption of strawberries has been steadily increasing over the last ten years. Currently, the volumes purchased are 31% higher than those purchased in 2000, and 19% if compared to 2005. The consumption reached 80,000 tons in 2012. Strawberries accounted for about 2% of purchases of fruit in terms of volume, but 4% in terms of expenditure.

In 2013, the acreage of strawberries remains unchanged in Italy with almost 3,700 hectares. Crops in open field are 17% of the areas, while 83% are protected. Producing regions are Basilicata (-9% compared to 2012), Calabria (-5%), Sicily (+1%), Campania (+4%), the province of Bolzano (+5%), the province of Trento (- 11%).
