Australian professionals are hoping that the authorization for Japanese strawberries will allow the authorization of many of their fruits in Japan.
In Australia a report from the Ministry of Agriculture recommends that fresh strawberries from Japan be allowed for import, subject to biosecurity conditions. Japan had requested this access to the Australian market in 2016.
Today, Australian professionals want this authorization for strawberries to serve as bargaining chips during trade negotiations between the two countries. To obtain authorization from Japan for other Australian products, such as blueberries, avocados, mangoes, citrus fruits and table grapes.
Despite a free trade agreement between Australia and Japan for nearly 5 years, from the perspective of Australian professionals little progress has been made in bringing their products to the Japanese market. They say that they are aware that any trade with a country requires trade in both directions. Australia could allow Japanese strawberries and Japan allow blueberries and other Australian fruits.
