Mainly due to unfavorable weather conditions, the Polish production of sheltered vegetables declined compared to the previous year.

According to a study carried out by the Institute of Agricultural Economics, the Polish producer of sheltered vegetables (greenhouses, tunnels) recorded a slight decrease in the volumes produced in 2020. Vegetables cultivated under shelter covered an area of 5,615 hectares (5 586.4 hectares in 2019).

The total production of vegetables under shelter amounted to 1,150,000 tonnes, slightly less than the 1,169,200 tonnes of the previous season. The share of the production of vegetables under shelter in relation to the total production of vegetables in Poland increased from 23.3 to 22% in 2020.

Tomatoes. In 2020 tomatoes covered 2,105 hectares (2,102.6 hectares in 2019) and production totaled 670,000 tons (677,300 tons in 2019). The drop of 1.1% is mainly due to unfavorable weather conditions last spring, which had few sunny days and recorded low temperatures.

Cucumbers. In 2020 cucumbers covered 1,100 hectares (1,110.8 hectares in 2019) and production totaled 290,000 tons (297,100 tons in 2019).

Other vegetables. In 2020 the other vegetables grown under shelter included peppers, eggplants, lettuce, radishes which covered 2,410 hectares and whose production totaled 190,000 tonnes. In 2019 the area covered 2,373 hectares and production totaled 194,800 tonnes for these other vegetables.

In Poland in 2020 the total area of vegetable production (sheltered vegetables and field vegetables) was 182,100 hectares and the total vegetable harvest was 5,175,000 tons.
