The Brazilian food retailing reaches R$1.067 Trillion turnover and strengthens its role in the Economy
Brazil’s food retail sector continued its strong expansion in 2025, reaching an annual household consumption value of $1.067 trillion Brazilian Reais or €181 billion, according to data from ABRAS, NielsenIQ, Sebrae, and the Federal Revenue Service. The sector now represents 6.5% of the country’s GDP and remains one of the largest generators of jobs and income in Brazil.
424,000 stores, Top5 retail chains
The industry currently operates through more than 424,000 stores and employs approximately 9 million people nationwide, ABRAS Ranking 2025 data show that major retail groups continued to expand aggressively. The Top5 retail chains Assaí Atacadista, Mateus Supermercados, Carrefour, Plurix, and Supermercados BH recorded the largest revenue growth, reinforcing the importance of scale and regional expansion strategies. Store expansion was another key driver of growth. Supermercados BH, GPA, Koch, Assaí Atacadista, and DMA stood out by significantly increasing the number of locations, demonstrating retailers’ confidence in market opportunities and consumer demand.
