End of a complicated season for strawberries

Prices in increase from 5 to 6 % saved the season.
Strawberries harvests are ended in Huelva where season were complicated this year.
The sector had to face two important problems:
- A storm which destroyed fields causing the loss of 10 million kilos of fruits.
- And, in certain countries of Europe, campaigns criticized the use of pesticides.
The harvest began at the end of February and ends these days. For Freshuelva’s President, the total production decreased from 10 % to 12 % and will reach 220 500 tons.
80 % was sold as fresh product, 20 % was intended for an industrial custom. Surfaces were 6385 hectares that is a 2 % decrease compared to the previous season.
If production was in decline, prices increased 5 to 6 % according to Freshuelva. What is going to save in part the season. The final data will be published in the next weeks.
