Large international chains have changed the eating habits of Chinese, who are now affected by obesity.
Large retail chains now account for 49% of supermarkets in major cities (Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou).
These chains have a large Western food supply and the Chinese, with their rising purchasing power, have discovered new products and changed their eating habits. An IGD food industry analyst noted that the Chinese have moved from a diet rich in pork and rice to a diet rich in wheat
, grains, dairy products, and more salt, sugar, oil and raw fat.
Result: Chinese are putting on weight with obesity now affecting nearly 325 million people in China, or 24.5% of the population.
In 8 years, the Chinese food market has tripled and is expected to reach 1000 billion per year in 2014.
