The online edition of the Interpera 2021 congress brought together speakers from the 6 main producing countries in Europe: Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal. The data announced indicates that Europe expects a significant drop in pear production for this 2021 season.
AREFLH, the main organizer of the event, has just brought together for Interpera 2021 around twenty speakers from the 6 main producer countries in Europe: Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal. The data announced and detailed by these experts on production all indicate that Europe expects a significant drop in pear production for the 2021 season.
The generalized frosts of March and April will cause a drop in volumes in all production areas, with the exception of Portugal. This decrease should reach in particular -50% for France and -30% for Belgium.
Another theme discussed during this congress: trade. The discussions showed that the estimated production decline will force good planning of the campaign to avoid leaving markets and customers destitute. The pear consumption trends in Europe were then detailed. During the health crisis, demand was satisfactory but the market must be revitalized. In particular via communication on the health benefits of pears and via social networks to encourage consumption among the youngest. Finally, innovation is necessary to obtain new varieties in order to broaden the visual and taste offer.
If the health situation in Europe allows it, the 2022 edition will be held in person in Rotterdam where the congress will be organized by DPA (Dutch Produce Association).
