North Korea to lease land from Russia
MD
A delegation from North Korea has moved to the far east of Russia in the Amur region, to lease land to grow vegetables and cereals.
North Korea plans to lease several thousand hectares of land in the Amur region, which has about 200,000 hectares of fallow land that is municipal or private property. The future farms will cultivate soybeans, corn and potatoes.
In North Korea, food problems are chronic and worsened by heavy rains this summer with flooding hitting 60,000 hectares of agricultural areas. Due to the shortage of available land, North Korea has committed to this unprecedented project.
The lease should be established on the basis of 50 rubles ($ 1.70) per year per hectare in the coming weeks.
