Cencosud is the No. 3 distributor in Latin America, its acquisition of the Carrefour subsidiary allows it to set up in Colombia
Carrefour has withdrawn from Colombia, by selling its subsidiary to Cencosud.
Carrefour sold its subsidiary in Colombia for € 2 billion to Chilee's Cencosud group. Carrefour had 72 hypermarkets, 16 convenience stores and four cash-and-carry which generated a turnover of € 1.5 billion.
Cencosud is the No. 3 distribution in Latin America, behind Wal-Mart Mexico and SAB
Brasileira de Distribuicao Grupo Pao (Acucar). Leader in Chile, Cencosud is already present in Argentina, Peru and Brazil.
Carrefour has now withdrawn from several markets (Greece, Singapore, Colombia) to focus on areas where the Group owns or wants to develop a leading position. Carrefour can not "not be everywhere in the world" according to the new strategy. It is now looking at the "future strategic" for its subsidiary in Turkey.
