Last week on social networks, several posts appeared about an alleged detection of traces of Covid-19 in boxes of Chilean cherries delivered to China. However, from the Chinese Government, there wasn't any official confirmation received.
A few days ago, a new publication by CCTV, the official Chinese media, appeared on the Weibo social network, where the alleged new detections of Covid-19 in Chilean cherries were denied.
On January 25, there was held a meeting between the private sector and the Chilean government.
At the meeting, they agreed to get in touch with the corresponding official Chinese authorities as soon as possible, in order to jointly address this critical circumstance.
The current promotional campaign implemented by the private sector which has already been launched in China, will intensify. ProChile will help with its implementation, to regain confidence in the high quality and safety of the Chilean product, and to recover consumption volumes.
The sector believes that cooperation between the governments of Chile and China will regain the trust of consumers and distributors, reaffirming the strict sanitary processes in the production and marketing processes, and that there is no risk in consuming the Chilean product at international markets.
During the 2019/2020 season, 11.500 containers were exported to China, with more than 41 million boxes of cherries weighing 5 kilos, for a FOB value of almost 1.500 million dollars. For the year 2021, an increase of 50 percent is forecasted, with an expected sales level of 1.8 billion dollars FOB level.
