Only 12% of the EU population consumes enough fruit and vegetables

Eurostat, the European Statistical Office, has processed the 2019 data on fruit and vegetable consumption in the EU. These results indicate that there is significant potential for more sales for the sector.
The percentages indicated refer to people aged 15 years and over. According to this Eurostat data in the EU 1 in 3 people or 33% of the population do not consume fruit and vegetables on a daily basis; 55% of the population consume between 1 and 4 portions of fruit and vegetables per day and only 12% of the population consume the recommended 5 portions.
By country, daily consumption of 5 or more portions of fruit and vegetables was highest in Ireland (33% of the population), the Netherlands (30%), Denmark (23%) and France (20%). In the other direction, the lowest daily consumption was observed in Romania (2%), prececed by Bulgaria and Slovenia (both 5%) and Austria (6%).
The study also shows that women consume more fruit and vegetables than men: 58% of women consume 1-4 portions per day, compared to 51% of men, and 15% of women consume 5 or more portions per day, compared to 10% of men.
For those consuming 0 portions per day, the total reaches 33% of the population. The study points out that more men (39%) than women (27%) in this category say they do not eat fruit and vegetables.
