As informed by the Argentinean Blueberry Committee, the blueberry harvest in Argentina has begun and the first shipments have already been dispatched to such non-traditional markets as Israel and Indonesia. The removal of withholding taxes is expected to enable the recovery of competitiveness.
In terms of varieties, Argentina still relies on varietal replacement and early varieties. The Committee is supporting projects from companies and institutions to develop new varieties.
In the 2021 season, the Committee projects the same production levels as in recent years, with some 17.5 million kilos per year. Out of these volumes, fresh blueberry exports are projected to account for around 9 million kilos; some 3.5 million kilos for the domestic market, and frozen fruit exports around 5 million kilos.
In terms of logistics, sea shipments are predicted to outnumber air shipments. This situation proves that Argentina’s commercial window is expanding, with early varieties and more supply months. The consolidation of frozen products also confirms the year-round supply trend.
According to the Committee, Argentine blueberries are reaching unprecedented levels of quality and larger size.
