In Cuba, the product of the moment seems to be pineapple. A new variety holds great promise and could boost production and exports.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, a new variety of pineapple, "more resistant to pests and offering better possibilities for industrial use" is available to farmers. The variety, called Perola, is of Brazilian origin and is characterized by yields of 60 to 70 tonnes per hectare. The fruit provides more juice, has less acidity, its cultivation time is shorter than the other varieties (Española Roja, Cayena Lisa).
Scientists at the University of Ciego de Avila have obtained 13,500 in vitro plants with even greater adaptability to soil conditions, pests and climate. By the end of the year, forecasted levels of exports could be exceeded.
The increase in national production will coincide with an increase in demand for this fruit on the European market.
