The yield increase will offset the decline of surfaces for the French melon.
The national production is still less 4 important than for the previous year, according to the report Agreste, Ministry of Agriculture.
Poor weather conditions have severely impacted the production. The coming weeks will be significant for this campaign, the good development of crops requires higher temperatures.
For this campaign 2013, the surfaces of melon totaled 14,516 hectares, a decrease of more than 250 ha. Greenhouse crops are stable compared to the previous campaign, with 716 hectares; protected crops with 7078 hectares are down by 3.5%; the cultures of outdoors with 6722 hectares were down by 0.5 %.
The southeastern regions are the only ones to increase their areas, elsewhere crops decrease by -2% in the Midwest and -5% in the southwest.
The 2013 French production is estimated at 285 000 t (- 1%). Available volumes will be in a very slight decline compared to the previous season, the increase in performance will offset the decline of surfaces. All production regions announce production delay of several weeks.
