Demand remains strong for Californian garlic

In the United States, as in other countries, the health crisis has had a direct impact on the demand for certain products. After a slight decrease, the demand for garlic has started to rise again and remains at high levels.

 

 

 

The activity of the restaurant-hotel sector fell due to the health crisis. Until representing only 10% of its normal rate. This drop in activity initially impacted the demand for garlic, but retail sales increased as more consumers prepared meals at home.

 

 

 

At the end of June, restaurant activity returned to almost normal levels. And retail sales volumes held steady. According to industry professionals, many consumers believe that garlic can fight the COVID-19 virus. Which continues to drive sales and keeps them at high levels.

 

 

 

U.S. garlic production is concentrated in California which produced 4,185,000 CWT (418,500 tonnes) in 2019, according to NASS USDA data. The other producing states are Oregon, Nevada, Washington and New York.
