Chilean cherry strengthens its position in the Indian market.
VU
In this fiscal year, the Committee of Cherries of the Chilean Fruit Exporters Association (Asoex), increases its presence in the Indian market with bigger volumes of shipments, and at the same time launches the first promotion campaign for cherries in this market.
According to ASOEX, to date Chile has exported 255 tons of fresh cherries to India, compared to 126 tons shipped in the same period of the 2019-2020 fiscal year. The main varieties are Regina, with 37 % of the total, Lapins (19 %), Santina (11 %) and Bing (7 %).
Chile has a commercial agreement with India for the export of this fruit, which favors Chile over other origins, and also promises good expectations for future growth.
Although the main destination is still China, opening new destinations and improving entry conditions is an important strategy for the sector, highlights Ronald Bown, the President of ASOEX.
He added that the importers that began to buy Chilean cherries this year have achieved very positive results, therefore, they will seek to have more volume in future years.
As for small retailers, Chilean cherries are also expected to be an important product.
ASOEX also highlights that in India, the e-commerce business is growing and will grow in the future, for which they foresee that more e-commerce operators will continue to sell Chilean cherries in the future, especially after positive results achieved by retailers in the current campaign.
Promotion.
In December, within the framework of the Christmas and New Year celebrations, as well as the Pongal harvest festival and Valentine's Day, the Cherry Committee, together with ProChile and the Chilean embassy in India, launched the first campaign to promote the Chilean cherries in India for the 2020-21 season.
With the slogan "Cherry-sh Every Moment", the promotion was focused on promoting this fruit in India, emphasizing its health properties, especially in times of pandemic.
