Banana exports from Thailand could see major growth with new initiative

The success of the initiative will depend on effective government coordination and how well it addresses the immediate concerns of rice farmers.
The Thai government is encouraging rice farmers to diversify into banana cultivation as a way to offset declining rice prices. Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan announced the initiative, highlighting bananas as a profitable alternative due to their high yield and strong demand in international markets, particularly Japan.
Thailand currently produces around 8,000 tonnes of bananas annually, with 2,000 tonnes available for export. Meanwhile, Japan imports nearly one million tonnes of bananas each year, presenting a significant opportunity for Thai farmers to increase their earnings.
However, the proposal has faced skepticism in parliament. People's Party MP Narongdech Ularnkul questioned whether the government is adequately addressing the falling rice prices and urged the Commerce Minister to coordinate with the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry before recommending such a shift.
Concerns were also raised regarding the National Rice Policy and Management Committee. Traditionally chaired by the prime minister, the leadership role has now been assigned to Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, prompting doubts about the government's commitment to farmers' issues.
As Thailand explores crop diversification to improve farmers' incomes, the initiative highlights the challenge of balancing short-term price support with long-term agricultural sustainability. The success of this plan will depend on effective government coordination and how well it addresses the immediate concerns of rice farmers.
