The orchards of almonds have just suffered an episode of frost which makes fear a decline in production.
California recorded warm, sunny weather in January that allowed early flowering. The sector was already forecasting a very early harvest and a record volume but a frost episode has just occurred.
The area of San Joaquin Valley where the almond orchards are already in bloom has just recorded a sudden drop in temperatures. For several days the temperatures were just above 32 ° F (0 ° C), then dropped to 26 ° F (-3.3 ° C). Sufficient level to severely affect the production of almonds.
It is still too early to establish an exact estimate of the damage caused by this frost. But according to professionals the consequences will be serious.
