Sustained progression in Spanish fruit and vegetable exports in 2022

The Spanish import of fruit and vegetables continues to show continued growth during the year 2022 and according to data from the Department of Customs and Special Taxes of the Tax Agency, up to August it rose, compared to the same end of 2021, by 5.5% in volume, totaling 2.4 million tons and 11% in value, reaching 2,404 million euros. The average price of imported production increased by 5%.
Vegetables grew 14% in volume and 27% in value, with a total of 1.1 million tons for 714 million euros in the period from January to August 2022.
The potato leads the ranking, constituting 58% of the total exported, with 658,457 tons (+17%) and revenues of 207 million euros (+43%). In addition, tomato stands out, with 114,941 tons (+15%) for 126 million euros (+30%) and pepper, with 56,222 tons (+13%) and 63 million euros (47%).
Fruits have maintained the same volume as in 2021, 1.3 million tons (-0.4%) and the value increased by 5%, reaching 1,690 million euros.
The most exported fruits this season continue to be bananas (255,784 T), pineapple (101,000 T) and apples (128,000 T). Watermelon showed a strong increase from January to August 2022, totaling 144,712 tons (+30%) for 96.3 million euros (+51%). Avocados fell by 6% in volume and 13% in value, with 130,599 tons and 240 million euros, respectively.
The average prices of imported vegetables have gone from 0.56 euros per kilo to 0.6 euros per kilo, an increase of 11%. Those of fruits have increased 6%, standing at 1.27 euros per kilo, compared to 1.20 in 2021, according to data from the Department of Customs and Special Taxes of the Tax Agency.
