The latest data confirm Costa Rica once again as the undisputed leader in the Central American region for pineapple exports.
In the first quarter of 2019, Central American countries exported US $251 million worth of pineapple. The main pineapple exporter in Central America remains by far Costa Rica at US $235.2 million, followed by Guatemala with US $6.6 million, Honduras with US $ 6.4 million and Panama with US $2.6 million. Nicaragua and El Salvador have not recorded any significant sales abroad.
From January to March, the main buyers were the United States (48% of the volume and 47.25% in value), then the Netherlands (14.99% in volume and 15.23% in value), Italy (6.98% in volume and 7.38% in value), Spain (6.74% in volume and 7.37% in value), Belgium (6.06% in volume and 6.13% in value).
At the beginning of 2019, Costa Rica had 44,500 hectares dedicated to pineapple cultivation, but due to high production costs and lower international prices, the cultivated area could fall to 38,000 hectares until 2021.
