Germany is a major producer of asparagus but in 2022 according to Destatis data, the Federal Statistical Office, the country imported a much lower volume than the previous year.
Destatis, the Federal Statistical Office, announces that in 2022 Germany imported 19,500 tonnes of fresh or chilled asparagus, i.e. almost -29% compared to the previous year.
The vast majority (87%) of this volume was imported over the period from March to June, which corresponds to the harvest period in Germany. The main supplier countries were Spain (34% of the total volume imported), Greece (24%), Italy (12%) and Peru (12%).
According to Destatis, in 2022 Germany produced 110,300 tons of asparagus, more than 5 times the volume that was imported. The German harvest in 2022 varied by -8% compared to 2021. Mainly due to the decrease in the cultivated area which totaled only 21,300 hectares in 2022, i.e. -5% compared to 2021.
Despite this decrease in area, asparagus was the vegetable with the largest area in Germany in 2022, ahead of onions (15,100 hectares) and carrots (13,600 hectares).
