Tomatoes, garlic, zucchinis, cucumbers, artichokes, dessert grapes and strawberries are considered as sensitive in the new agreements between EU-Egypt.
Agreements between the European Union and Egypt on mutual measures of trade liberalization of farm produces came into effect at the beginning of the month.
Since June 1st, these agreements abolish customs duties on imports of the EU of all fruit and vegetables, with the exception of those who are considered as sensitive: tomatoes, garlic, zucchinis, cucumbers, artichokes, dessert grapes and strawberries. For those fruit and vegetables, there’s a maintain of a certain degree of protection by the implementation of calendars and contingents planned in agreements.
For other products, as potatoes and onions which have a quota of 250.000 tons and 15.000 tons in the current agreement, quota and protections are eliminated, what means the total liberalization of the Egyptian exports towards the EU of these two vegetables.
The EU-Egypt agreement was adopted on October 9th 2009, published on April 28th 2010 to the Official Journal of the European Communities.
May 26th of this year was published the official regulation 449/2010 of the Committee to establish contingents for the concerned farm produces.
