The fruits sector, future growth engine for the country

New Zealand predicts opportunities for growth in the fruits sector.
The Ministry of Economic Development released a report showing real growth opportunities. New Zealand could benefit from its geographical proximity with Asia to become the main supplier of fruit. Asian demand increases and raises the value of New Zealand exports. During the last decade, the value of kiwifruit exports nearly doubled from 567 million $ in 2002 to 1,043,000,000 dollars in 2012.
This growth in a traditional New Zealand sector, the kiwi, could be extended to other fruits (avocados, cherries, blueberries) to strong export potential. To consolidate, the report emphasizes the need to invest in new varieties and to develop value-added products (juices, extracts ...).
According to the specialists, the report published in the framework of the ministerial project is the country's the most complete analysis of food industry.
